In a panoramic position on the Motta Rossa promontory, between the lower basin of Lake Maggiore and the Borromeo Gulf, Belgirate was frequented by illustrious names such as the editor Treves, who built a villa here and offered hospitality to a host of guests including De Amicis, Verga, D'Annunzio, and Bistolfi. Stendhal, Gozzano and Fogazzaro often chose this town for their vacations.
