Piedmont hotels, itineraries, and inspirational travel ideas.
'Piemonte', the land at the foot of the mountains, is surrounded on three sides by the Alps.
Here in the mountains is the source of Italy's longest river, the Po. Mountains cover almost half of Piedmont, forming a spectacular backdrop to forests, streams and lakes. Each valley has a distinct character. There are National parks such as 'Paradiso'. Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta in north - eastern Piedmont have inspired poets and writers who have come here to find peace for centuries. In the gentler hills of the south vineyards abound - this area produces some of Italy's finest wines. The area also grows most of Europe's rice. The other face of Piedmont is its large and industrial cities such as Novara, Vercelli, Asti, Alessandria, and Cuneo. Turin, birthplace of Vermouth, is dominated by Fiat. But the centre, built in the Piedmont Baroque style, and still retaining its Roman street grid, has remained quietly beautiful.
